The use of assessment rubrics helps students to be more aware of the competences they need to develop and how these will be assessed. These rubrics can be pre-defined by the teacher and can also be negotiated with students to increase their engagement with the learning outcomes.
- Select a specific learning activity and define the criteria and indicators that may use to assess the students’ learning;
- Revise the criteria to better adjust to the learning outcomes (if needed);
- Decide if the assessment rubrics are going to be used for summative or formative assessment (including, for instance, the students’ self-regulation);
- Create the assessment rubrics using your LMS or another digital tool (e.g., Rubric Maker, at https://rubric-maker.com/);
- Consider the advantages and disadvantages of negotiating the criteria with the students beforehand.
