3.3.5. WHAT GOOD PRACTICES ARE IMPORTANT WHEN USING ASSESSMENT RUBRICS IN VLE?

  • Develop assessment rubrics adjusted to each learning activity – Assessment rubrics should be tailored according to the intended learning outcomes and the particularities of each learning activity.
  • Be transparent – Students should be fully aware of how their performance is going to be assessed. Students should be given the possibility to consult the rubrics anytime from the very beginning and the assessment results should be available for them to analyse.
  • Embed the rubrics into the assignments – Students can be asked to self-assess their work or peer-assess the colleagues work using the rubrics which they agreed upon from the beginning. This is particularly relevant when done along the learning process for formative assessment purposes. It will promote the development of assessment competences and also help them to be more aware of the activity itself.
  • Ponder developing online rubrics – especially when the assignment is to be submitted online it is advantageous to develop and use an online rubric, given that the scores for each criterion can be automatically entered in the online grade book in the course management system.
