Distributed Cognition

3. Distinctive features

We can summarize following distinct features for distributed cognition.

  1. The limits of the unit of cognition The unit of analysis is expanded from what is going on inside the human mind, including the entire system that achieves the calculations.
  2. Mechanisms that are considered as cognitive processes.  The range of mechanisms that are considered as cognitive processes from mental processes to physical and social interactions is expanded.
  3. Extension of cognitive science models outside the individual. A review of physical artefacts and social organization, as well as cognitive activity support.  Not only coordination and communication between individuals, but also a problem-solving system.
